John Anderson studied at the Royal Academy of Music under the legendary James Blades and as a student played timpani and percussion with most of the leading orchestras in the U.K., including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1980 John moved to Leeds to take up the position of principal timpanist with the Orchestra of Opera North. John left Opera North in 1989 to concentrate on his conducting career and has worked with many leading ensembles, including the Halle Orchestra.

 

John was a principal lecturer at Leeds College of Music for 24 years where he taught conducting and he was Academic Staff Governor from 2005-2010.

 

John has recently celebrated 30 years as principal conductor and music director of the Airedale Symphony Orchestra.
